Choosing a genuine quality towbar (not just one the manufacturer calls 'quality') is the most important consideration. Normally the price of a towbar indicates its quality. In our experience, it is better to pay for a towbar that has been produced up to a specific quality rather than down to a low price. After all, the towbar connects two rather valuable items together.

Many vehicle manufacturers use Witter, Brink & Bosal towbars as their approved equipment.

Other considerations are the style of towbar. Still the most popular is the 'two bolt fixing' towball type, developed in the UK, which still offers the facility to add accessories such as a bumper protectors, stablisers and cycle carriers. Further consideration may be to how the appearance of the rear of the vehicle is affected by a towbar permanently in position. A detachable towbar is a option to overcome this.
There are two main types of detachable, those that when the towball is removed, leaves no sign of a towbar, even the electrical socket flips under the bumper and those that because of the room under the bumper is restricted, leave the electrical sockets visible under the bumper or rear valance as well as the location point for the towball (usually covered by a black bung. However, they still look very unobtrusive and not having a towbar protruding past the bumper can be considered to be important when not towing.
The swan neck towbar is popular with vehicle manufacturers as their original equipment towbar and is also popular in the rest of Europe. Still not so popular in the UK as there is no flexibility to add accessories but some prefer the appearance to the 'two bolt fixing' type towball.

The towbar is painted in black primer/top coat from the factory. The towbar is finished in a high quality black top coat which gives excellent protection against corrosion.
All holes that need to be drilled or scraped clean of mastic are protected with 'Waxoyl' underseal to ensure no rust can occur where the towbar meets the vehicle chassis.
